Calling All Fiber Artists! Seeking Handmade Cozies for the Fiber Arts Geo-Dome Project.
Hey crafty people, Agnes here with another crazy project idea that I need your help with!
I’m building a 6 meter diameter geodesic dome from PVC pipe, just like this one seen at Maker Faire Bay Area. The structure in this photo was created by the brilliant minds at Strawbees. They scaled up their original connectors pieces to make this Strawbees MEGA dome installation. Instead of playing with straws, now we’re building with PVC pipes! Bigger = better.
The Strawbees folks were kind of enough to let me use their pattern to create my own dome. I will be laser cutting the plastic connectors at kwartzlab, and cutting down lengths of PVC conduit pipe for the structure.
So here’s where I need your help to make this dome even better. I want to cover this thing in cozies! I’m looking for all types of fiber work that can be made into slip covers to cover up the PVC tubes. I want your knitting, crochet, sewing, quilting, weaving, spinning, felting, even your pom poms and tassels! Let’s take this thing from drab to fab! Make your cozy a reflection of yourself, and add a personal touch to this community sourced craft project!
**Update** I’ve had a lot of people ask just what is the definition of “fiber art”? While traditionally it includes things like yarn, fabric and thread, it can easily be extended to materials like leather and paper too. Basically if you can wrap a PVC pipe in it, and it looks awesome, I will include it on the dome! My goal is to gather an eclectic collection of cozies to give this dome an extra wow-factor.
If you can contribute a cozy BEFORE Maker Expo:
Please make a tube that can easily slip over a standard 1/2″ PVC pipe. Outside dimension is 2 cm diameter [or 13/16″ in imperial]. The lengths of the structure will vary between 77 cm – 99 cm [or 30″ – 39″ in imperial]. So your cozy can be anywhere in this range for the length.
If you will bring your cozy on the DAY OF Maker Expo:
Please make it a rectangle that can be stitched around the pipe by hand. We won’t be able to detach the pipes once it is up, so we’ll be adding new cozies on site, guerrilla style, the day of.
Additional items needed to make the dome even cozier inside. These can be donated permanently or just borrowed for the day of the event.
– bean bag chairs
– comfy clean rugs
I am looking for donations of yarn, knitting needles, crochet hooks, as well as old bed sheets (for rag rug making activity). Please get in touch if you have materials to donate.
Contact me at email@example.com when you’re ready to arrange a drop off of your finished cozies. Or come on down to Maker Expo and make something on site. We will have volunteers and materials ready for lots of cozy crafty fun!
Want to hang out in the geo-dome and help others learn to knit or crochet? I’m still looking for more volunteers who think this is an awesome way to spend a few hours on Sat. Sept 19th!
