6 Days – Thanks to Volunteers!

Community events require a community to run them and Maker Expo could not operate without the 80+ volunteers who willingly donate their time each year. Today we want to take a moment to thank the volunteers in advance for the tireless effort they will put in next weekend. We do this now because thousands of people are reading this blog daily and thanking them after the event won’t have quite the same… reach.

Volunteering with friends is fun!

Each volunteer works a minimum of 2 shifts, typically 2.5 hours in duration each. Some of the tasks that they do include:

  • Welcoming attendees to the event and showing them where things are.
  • Assisting with the many free workshops supported by our sponsors.
  • Counting attendees and controlling entrance to City Hall.
  • Helping organizers and exhibitors setup Friday night and Saturday morning and tear down Saturday evening.
  • Taking water and snacks to our exhibitors and otherwise making sure that they have everything that they need to put on a great show.
  • Taking pictures of the event.

Assisting with the learn to solder workshop

We do our best to show our appreciation for the efforts of our volunteers. Every volunteer receives a custom Maker Expo t-shirt and food / snacks / coffee during the event. This year we are providing each volunteer with a Maker Expo water bottle that they can refill as needed at the Waterloo Region Water Wagon, which will be at the event. We have also arranged with the Williams Fresh Cafe in City Hall to offer a 10% discount to all of our volunteers on the day of Maker Expo.

Assisting at the button-making workshop

The Maker Expo organizing team wants to thank each and every one of our volunteers in advance for their help in making this event possible. We are currently finalizing shifts for the volunteers and expect to have all of them filled in the next couple of days. It is possible that we will still have some available openings. Sign up through the web site is closed, but if you are still interested please email our volunteer coordinators at volunteer@makerexpo.ca.

As you can see the volunteers are all smiles and passion. They may actually get to have more fun our guests!

See you September 10th, Rain or Shine! – Neil
